Step back in time at this year’s Mission Tejas State Park’s annual Folk Festival, held April 28, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This popular yearly event gives visitors a unique perspective into the lives and activities of some of the earliest Texas settlers. Re-enactors in period costumes are on hand to explain their trades, crafts, and occupations through demonstration and explanation.
The topics of the day are varied and informative, including daily life, building, toolmaking and use, soap making, laundry, quilting, weaving, and much more. There will be Civil War exhibits, and the Texas Top Guns will perform Wild West re-enactments throughout the day. Sample tasty fare from the genuine chuck wagon, listen to music that will keep you rooted in the past, and participate in an exciting silent auction featuring products supplied by local merchants.
The Folk Festival promises a hefty dose of educational fun for all ages, and admission is free to the public. If you choose to make a donation to benefit the Park, you can donate to Mission Tejas State Park Friends Group.

This Grapeland, Texas, state park spans 363.5 acres in Houston County, 22 miles northeast of Crockett. There’s plenty to do here even when the Folk Festival is not going on: Visit anytime for great fishing, hiking, camping, and picnicking. There is a pond near the picnic area where you can explore local fish and aquatic life, and simply basking in the natural beauty of the Forest Trail Region is always an enjoyable pastime.
