About the Museum

The Museum for East Texas Culture is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization located at 400 Micheaux Avenue, Palestine, Texas, 75801. The hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The following is the price of admission:

  • Adults: $3
  • Students: $1

The museum used to be a junior high in 1939, a high school in 1955, and finally an elementary school from 1966 to 1976. In 1976, the building was set to be demolished due to its poor condition. However, many residents saved the building because of its integral part of the city culture. The old school is now a museum. For those of you who want to support the museum, consider becoming a member for $25 a year. This price covers your entire family.

There are numerous exhibits you’ll want to visit in the museum. First of all, the Fire Department Room was originally created by the members of the Palestine Fire Department to honor those who have previously served. The history of local firefighters is quite interesting. There’s even a small scale diorama of the first volunteer fire department in Palestine!

The Railroad Room is a room you won’t want to miss seeing. Here, you’ll find a variety of railroad memorabilia. You’ll get to see photographs, tools, lanterns, railroad tracks, and much more. You can also listen to older sound effects of a steam engine!

Where a gymnasium once was is now a log cabin exhibit. The Ingram Hudson Log Cabin was built in 1857 by the Ingram Hudson family. The cabin was a donation and is one of the most popular exhibits to this day.

You also don’t want to miss the Black History Room which displays the history of Palestine’s African American citizens and their many achievements.
