The Texas State Railroad runs right through Palestine, and those trains and tracks are responsible for a great deal of history. Learn more about that history by visiting the Railroad Heritage Center in Palestine. The heritage center just opened a little over a year ago, and it’s already a popular spot for railroad enthusiasts. The center is open every day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and admission is free. However, donations are accepted.

Check Out the Model Train Set
The massive model train set is the heritage center’s signature display. This HO-style set is around 20 by 40 feet, and the details are amazing. The model is so large that it took a year and a half to move it to its new location. It had to be cut into 10 pieces, and then, the sections had to be put back together.
Now, it’s all set up and ready for you to view. It has miniature buildings and people, and the landscape will let you experience East Texas.
Many of the buildings were made from scratch, and the builder left the backs off so you can see how they were made. It’s amazing what the builder did with cereal boxes and other materials.

Learn About Railroad History
The heritage center also has photos, books, and videos for you to browse through when you visit. If you have questions, the curator is on hand to answer them and to provide additional information about the history of the railroad. You will learn so much when you visit.
