Summertime is primetime for outdoor activities, from sports to pool days and much more. It’s a great occasion to bring your family’s creative inclinations outside as well. When the sun’s out, your driveway can become a canvas for their artwork, and you don’t even have to buy sidewalk chalk to let them express their creativity. Get the whole family in on the fun with this easy-to-clean DIY sidewalk chalk paint.
Gather the Essentials
When you look at the ingredients, you’ll see that you can make this sidewalk “chalk” without using any actual chalk at all. This do-it-yourself method creates a vibrant, fluid paint that can be easily washed away when everyone’s done. To make the sidewalk paint, you’ll need these common household items:
- 3 cups corn starch
- 3 cups water
- food coloring in 4-6 colors
- 1 large mixing bowl
- 4-6 smaller bowls, or a 6-cup muffin pan
- A spoon or spatula
- Paint brushes
Remember that you can also make more or less paint if you need to. Adding more corn starch will thicken the mix, while adding more water will thin it out.
Mixing the Chalk Paint
Mix the corn starch and water in the large bowl until you have smoothed out all the clumps of starch. After that, you just have to fill each smaller bowl with the mixture, then add a few drops of food coloring to each portion. Mix the coloring in, and keep a stirring spoon or spatula handy to re-mix the paint on occasion, as the corn starch might start to settle at the bottom after a while.
Painting and Easy Cleanup
Your sidewalk chalk paint is now ready for action, so grab some paint brushes and bring it outside. Once your family’s painting day is done, you can wash the slate clean with a garden hose. Alternatively, you could leave the artwork right where it is until the rain comes along.
