If the warmer weather is calling you into the great outdoors, there are plenty of fun ways to enjoy the fresh air around Palestine.
A Walk in the Woods
On the northwest side of Palestine, you’ll find a beautiful, natural escape teeming with wildlife and serene scenery. The Palestine Community Forest spans 700 acres of wooded land and lakes, filled with tall pines, dogwoods, walnut, and other trees, all providing branches for the local songbirds to perch on as they serenade visitors. Nearly two miles of hiking trails wind through the forest, leading you by placid lakes spotted with water lily pads as well as gently flowing creeks. Interpretive signs explain the natural sights around you, and if you prefer to spend your time on the water, you can head out for a day of fishing and boating.
Whenever you visit Davey Dogwood Park, you’ll be able to explore a 254-acre wooded space through eight miles of hiking trails. Open all year long, this picturesque park offers picnic spaces and a pavilion for relaxing breaks with friends and family. As you explore on foot or on your bike, you’ll see a variety of flora and fauna, including the park’s namesake dogwood trees.
Fun on the Farm
Fresh berries are one of springtime’s wonderful offerings, and you can bring home a gallon for your own kitchen from a local farm. At Lake Creek Blueberry Farm, you’re welcome to come buy a pre-picked portion or head out to the farm to pick your own. The berry picking usually starts in May and runs through July.
If golf is your game, you have several fine courses to visit around Anderson County. Pine Dunes Golf Course has earned accolades from Golf Weekly as well as high marks from Golf Digest. Down the road, Elkhart Golf Club offers a challenging course for an easy price, while the Wildcat Golf Course provides a quick nine-hole run along with its driving range. You can also try the Iron Spike Disc Golf Course at Greens Park if you want to leave your clubs at home.
